This content is a copy of a Project Aardwolf conservation and environment programme in their series "The thing about....." aired on the DSTV Kyknet Channel in South Africa. It explores some of the conservation and environmental rehabilitation work being done by Sappi, as a commercial plantation forestry company, with particular reference to the Karkloof Blue butterfly, the Blue Swallow bird, the Karkloof Forest as well as the Claremont Stewardship Reserve.
Sappi obtains 70% of its woodfibre requirement in South Africa from 380,000 hectares of both own and managed commercial plantations, currently with more than 34 million tons of standing timber. All own-grown wood is Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) and ISO 9000 certified. A further 150,000 hectares of land is managed for biodiversity and species conservation, including wetlands, riparian zones and indigenous forests and grasslands.
